Heritage Icons Photography Auction Showcases Signed Mikan Rookie Card Photo

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a stunning collection of autographed vintage photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, sparking excitement among sports memorabilia enthusiasts and collectors. One of the most coveted items up for bidding is a 1948 photo featuring basketball legend George Mikan in action, the same image mirrored on his iconic 1948 Bowman rookie card. This 8×10 Type 1 photo, enhanced with Mikan’s signature in blue ink, is projected to command a price of over $20,000.

The theme of signed vintage photos resonates throughout the auction, with a late 1940s image capturing Cleveland Browns icon Otto Graham, reminiscent of his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, also bearing his signature. Furthermore, a remarkable autographed photo from 1949 showcases Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat for clinching the National League batting title, a season in which he was crowned MVP. This Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds particular significance for aficionados.

Another poignant photograph from 1957 portrays Robinson clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field upon his retirement from baseball. The image captures poignant details of his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two bats—one of which once belonged to the legendary Gil Hodges. Anticipated to attract bids exceeding $10,000, this piece encapsulates a poignant moment in baseball history.

Noteworthy in the auction is a photo believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, complete with Mays’ signature on the front, purportedly signed in the 1990s.

The online catalog of the auction showcases a diverse array of over 150 vintage images, some dating back more than a century. Notable among these is a photo from the 1919 World Series capturing the historic moment when Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shook hands before the infamous game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This image, furnished with the original paper caption and stamps on the back, is slated to commence bidding at $8,000.

Moreover, the auction spotlights rookie photos of sports luminaries such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), alongside various images portraying the iconic figures of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sports legends.

Through this captivating assembly of sports history immortalized in photography, the auction at Heritage Auctions provides a distinctive opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire a tangible piece of sports heritage. The auction will culminate on June 13, affording patrons a chance to own a slice of sporting history captured through the lens of time.
