Vintage Sports Card Sales Soar at REA’s February Auction

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run with their recent February auction, showcasing vintage sports cards and memorabilia that captivated collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The highlight of the event was the sale of a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, fetching an impressive $75,000 and setting a new record for this coveted piece of sports history.

The excitement didn’t stop there, as a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 series, graded PSA GOOD 2, made waves by breaking the record for its condition with a $15,000 sale. The auction drew in a large number of registry builders and collectors, especially with the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the iconic 196 Topps set. Among these gems, a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the show, reaching a staggering $19,200, showcasing the high demand for top-quality cards.

With a whopping 2,732 items up for grabs, REA’s auction featured a diverse range of collectibles that dazzled bidders. Notable sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 card, which fetched $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 card selling for $18,000, and a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball graded PSA NM-MT 8 going for $12,000, among other impressive sales.

Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed delight at the auction’s success and the enthusiastic response from the collector community. He also hinted at exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, hinting at more thrilling opportunities for avid collectors and enthusiasts in the future.

This auction not only reaffirms the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also promises an exciting trajectory for the hobby. With the Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the highly anticipated Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA continues to lead the way in the sports collectibles market, offering a platform for both seasoned collectors and newcomers to indulge in the thrill of the chase.
