Historic Sports Memorabilia Auction

Freeman’s/Hindman is making waves in the world of sports memorabilia with an auction that boasts a treasure trove of historic items. At the forefront is a complete set of 1984-85 Star Company basketball cards, a gem in the collectibles world. These cards stand out not just for their rarity, but also for the packaging — they’re still in their original team bags, just as they were back in the 80s. And the real cherry on top? A coveted Michael Jordan rookie card, the crown jewel of the set that’s expected to fetch a jaw-dropping $50,000 to $70,000.

The Star Company made a bold move by snagging the NBA’s trading card rights in the 1980s, taking over from Topps and setting the stage for their unique distribution strategy. These cards weren’t as widely available as those from bigger brands, often finding their way into albums rather than remaining intact in their packaging. So, finding a complete set in pristine condition like this is a true collector’s dream.

But the auction isn’t just about basketball. It delves into the depths of baseball history, with three autographed baseballs from none other than the legendary Babe Ruth. One ball features Ruth’s signature prominently displayed on the sweet spot, a testament to his enduring legacy and a must-have for any serious collector.

And let’s not forget about the other Michael Jordan cards up for grabs, including ones from his rookie season and a prized 1986-87 Fleer rookie card graded by PSA. The auction even extends beyond cards to include a rich tapestry of sports memorabilia, from a signed baseball commemorating the 1955 Baseball Hall of Fame induction to vintage gems like a Jimmie Foxx-signed ball and a Ty Cobb-inscribed piece from 1959.

Vintage card enthusiasts will find plenty to love, with standouts like a rare 1968 O-Pee-Chee Nolan Ryan rookie card and a near-complete set of 1952 Topps baseball cards, featuring over 60 high numbers. And let’s not overlook the multiple Mickey Mantle cards from the 50s and 60s that are sure to catch the eye of collectors keen on iconic sports figures.

As if that wasn’t enough, the auction also boasts a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIV Champions ring, a 1926 New York Yankees multi-signed baseball graced by the signatures of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, and a collection of 1920s-30s St. Louis Cardinals contract agreements signed by none other than Branch Rickey.

Running until June 13 on Freeman’s/Hindman’s website, this auction isn’t just about bidding on items—it’s a journey through the annals of sporting history. From basketball to baseball, and everything in between, there’s a piece of sports history waiting for every collector to discover and cherish.
