Rare Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth Cards Shine at Auction

In the exciting recent Heritage Spring Sports Card Auction, the star attractions were undeniably a T206 Ty Cobb card and a Babe Ruth rookie card, both fetching impressive sums. The T206 Ty Cobb card stole the spotlight, selling for a whopping $432,000. What makes this particular card so special is its distinctive tobacco advertisement back, a rarity that sets it apart from the rest. With only about 25 known to exist, its scarcity adds to its mystique and value.

Adding to the allure of the auction was the M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back Babe Ruth rookie card, which commanded a price of $348,000. This sought-after card exemplifies the enduring appeal of vintage sports memorabilia, with collectors willing to pay a premium for a piece of baseball history. The Heritage Auction proved that the fascination with legendary players like Cobb and Ruth continues to drive the market for sports cards.

Another highlight of the auction was the sale of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, fetching an impressive $204,000. The iconic status of Mantle in baseball history is clearly reflected in the prices collectors are willing to pay for his cards. Additionally, the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card reached a bid of $210,000, showcasing the crossover appeal of basketball memorabilia in the sports card market.

The Heritage Auction attracted over 2,450 bidders from around the globe, resulting in total sales exceeding $10 million. The demand for rare and high-grade sports cards was evident, with notable sales including one of the three PSA 10 graded 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie cards, which sold for $180,000. Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions, highlighted the broad range of offerings that catered to both seasoned collectors and newcomers to the hobby.

One of the most fascinating sales was the signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, with only 31 signed copies known to exist, making it a rare and coveted piece for collectors. The card’s sale price of $126,000 reflects the enduring popularity of baseball legends like Mays in the memorabilia market.

Collectors also showed interest in unopened materials, with a 1967 Topps Football cello box and a 1970 Topps baseball (Mixed Series) cello box each fetching $81,000. Additionally, a ticket stub from Jackie Robinson’s UCLA football debut surpassed expectations, selling for $22,800 and underscoring the value of historic sports artifacts.

A particularly remarkable find was the discovery of eight 1914 Lawrence Semon issue postcards, featuring baseball legends like Ty Cobb. An initial investment of $400 turned into a staggering $50,370, demonstrating the potential for extraordinary discoveries in the vintage card market.
